31 Days of Halloween: Movies and Shows of the Season

Hello dear readers,

What would October be without some ghouls, zombies and ghosts?? It actually would be September, just colder...ok ok I'll put away the geeky humor and get to the point.

This is the time of year when muggles allow their fears to roam free, they (we) seriously enjoy indulging in all things scary just so that the rest of the year they (we) can go about their (our) lives without that fear. This is of course one of the best time for horror film fans, I'm personally not much for the horror genre,

When I was a child the scariest movie I ever saw was Night of the Living Dead, not the new stuff I'm talking the original 1968 film version, scary as heck, watching those people try to find a way to live and everywhere they turned there were zombies.

Alfred Hitchcock's the Birds still makes me side-eye the heck out of birds especially if it seems they are following me. Talk about a scary movie, the scene with the kids in the school??!?!? To this day gives me willies.

Another one I thought I would through up as new classics are 28 Days Later, and 28 Weeks Later, horror on horrors right?? Scary part is these movies you can TOTALLY see coming true.
And of course we can't have Halloween without the King of the Season King Jack Skellington, yes I know it says the Nightmare Before Christmas, but isn't truly a Halloween movie??
I do have a few I will be checking out this season including the premiere of a favorite, which just the thought of that actually taking place gives me the willies.
Well this season's premier of Walking Dead is on October 16,2011,  at 9pm EST are you excited? The Com Con video is too awesome to boot and man can I tell you, I'm scared and want to run but I just can't help but watch it. What would you do? Would you try to survive or would you quit?? If you haven't had a chance to catch up on the series, they are now available on Netflix,  They also have some web episodes to wet the appetite and answer some questions from last season's premiere, they explained all about 'bicycle girl". Can I say it's really good!! And not to be all dark and gloomy, I also have a romantic movie for the season and a link back to last season's recommendations.
Last year we had the Good Witch's Blog Party, to celebrate the premier of a new addition to the series, this year there is another installment called the Good Witch's Family, it picks up from after the family has blended together, and let's us know what has been happening since the wedding.
The Good Witch's Family is having a family coming to visit, and of course, witchyness runs in the family,
and of course she bring mayhem right along with her,  and it seems that Cassie is running for Middleton mayor, I'm sure the mayor's wife loves that....
ohh the trouble that's a brewing in Middleton is going to be fun to watch, movie premiere's on October 29th on the Hallmark channel.
Season Survival Tip: Remember when a boogie shows up at your door and says "Trick or treat", don't answer, the tricks are deadly and the treats, well let's just say only another monster would enjoy those!! Have fun checking out the series for Samhain my loves and I will see you later.  Be Blessed

Parnormal Movie: Charlie St. Cloud

Ok so I know I am late on this one. I resisted my sisters attempts to get me to watch this movie for months, especially when I learned it was a disney movie kid in there I was like "hell no, I'm not watching any High School Musical kid". OMG was I an idiot. I freely admit it. This movie was freaking awesome!!!

So just in case you were like me and living under a rock here is a preview:
At first I was like "pssfft that looks corny" Until you actually watch it and realize it's pretty freaking awesome!! Wait I said that already. Well if you haven't figured it out (no spoilers) after hte accident that kils his brother, Charlie St. Cloud goes into a tail spin and stays there.  As the movie progresses you realize that he is a medium and this gift of his, that he gained from dying then coming back, makes him into a complicated man.   Only he can see the ghosts that visit the graveyard, and to everyone in his small town he's gone from being someone with a great bright sailing future, to a creepy kid who talks to himself.  As the movie progresses you see Charlie change and grow and finally become Charlie again. I had only one pet peeve, Charlie's friend who went to the military and came back was wearing a Marine outfit that was like two sizes too big, especially his hat, although I did recognize him as the spoiled kid from the new class of Scrubs doctors (love him there too)

I loved how his choice  to hang onto the memory of his brother, kept them both in a small world, spinning their wheels, and as his world expanded he learned, to let go. How many people do we know who hang on well past the time of letting go??

I enjoyed this movie immensely. Yes, it's not an Oscar performance, or a groundbreaking movie, but it was a feel good movie with a little lesson thrown in. If your looking for that one family night, or even just are bored one night or if you have a chance check it out, it's now on dvd, and you can rent it from redbox for a dollar.
Be Blessed

Paranormal Telly: Something Witchy this way comes.

ahhhhhhh...CW is doing the Secret Circle!!!!!!!
CW 2011 Fall TV Premiere: The Secret Circle image
Adam, Diana, Cassie(blond), Nick, Faye (in white shirt)

OMIgawds, so I think I may have talked about this book launching my faith??!!! Yes, i know it's a fiction novel, but it made me curious and I went seeking and landed in the lap of the Goddess, (don't knock it it worked out). So a few months ago, on one of the obsessive LJ Smith fan sites (yes i have been a fan and member ever since reading the books), they broke the news that the CW had bought the rights to make LJ's's book into a show, and many of us were in the wait and see mood.

CW was mum for a point, but now they have put up the previews, I'm excited for several reasons,:
1) there are no witch shows on at all
2) they actually managed to keep the main characters,

reasons i'm not happy so far
1) where the Hell is the rest of the coven??? it supposed to be 13 people.
2) they moved the show from Salem Ma to Washington.
3) Diana's a blond, Cassie is a brunette, the guy playing Adam should play Nick, and Nick should play Adam
4)who the heck is Melissa?? why oh why couldn't they have just kept Deborah, Nick's cousin as Faye's partner in crime??
5) will the old coven of Crones be in this one??
I'm still excited to see the show, just cause it looks cool, but their synopsis changed the whole story,

THE SECRET CIRCLE: Cassie Blake was a happy, normal teenage girl – until her mother Amelia dies in what appears to be a tragic accidental fire. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother Jane in the beautiful small town of Chance Harbor, Washington – the town her mother left so many years before – where the residents seem to know more about Cassie than she does about herself. As Cassie gets to know her high school classmates, including sweet-natured Diana and her handsome boyfriend Adam, brooding loner Nick, mean-girl Faye and her sidekick Melissa, strange and frightening things begin to happen. When her new friends explain that they are all descended from powerful witches, and they’ve been waiting for Cassie to join them and complete a new generation of the Secret Circle, Cassie refuses to believe them – until Adam shows her how to unlock her incredible magical powers. But it’s not until Cassie discovers a message from her mother in an old leather-bound book of spells hidden in her mother’s childhood bedroom, that she understands her true and dangerous destiny. What Cassie and the others don’t yet know is that darker powers are at play, powers that might be linked to the adults in the town, including Diana’s father and Faye’s mother – and that Cassie’s mother’s death might not have been an accident.

The series stars Britt Robertson as Cassie Blake, Thomas Dekker as Adam Conant, Gale Harold as Charles Meade, Phoebe Tonkin as Fay Chamberlain, Jessica Parker Kennedy as Melissa, Shelley Hennig as Diana Meade, Louis Hunter as Nick, Ashley Crow as Jane Blake and Natasha Henstridge as Dawn Chamberlain. Based upon the book series by L.J. Smith (author of The Vampire Diariesbook series), THE SECRET CIRCLE is from Outerbanks Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Scream,Dawson’s Creek), Andrew Miller (Imaginary Bitches), Leslie Morgenstein (The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl) and Gina Girolamo. Elizabeth Craft (The Vampire Diaries, Lie to Me) & Sarah Fain (The Vampire Diaries, Lie to Me) were executive producers on the pilot which was directed by Liz Friedlander (The Vampire Diaries, 90210).
I guess I can only wait and see how it plays out. I do love the fact that girl who plays Faye is also one of my childhood fave stars, she was on a Aussie show called H2O just add water, she was a mermaid
then, and now she's a witch.

So check out the previews, and I'll wait and see, before i judge, hey I mean they changed Vamp Diaries and look how big a hit that one is.

If you want to see or read the books before the show, check it out here (link is to the original version, there have been updated covers since, but check them out here as well)

Be blessed

Practical Magic Post 3 (the hidden post)

Hi everyone and welcome to my post for the Dark Winter, Dark Magick blog party. (this is the post I wanted to share on the practical magic blog party but was too scared to do so.)

I love this movie practical magic don’t you?? there are so many elemnts within the movie what’s not to love. My favorite parts of the moive?? well I really can't choose so I would have to say "the whole thing".

I know many people focused on the meaning of the movie and the fact that it was one of the few movies that portrayed paganism and the craft in a really good light, Here's why I really love it, there are zombies, ghosts, and some serious dark magick, including a curse that actually came back on the family of the curser (is that even a word?) more than on the people it was really intended for.We know the story of how the first Owens woman curses the men who fall in love with an Owens woman, and how it eventually leads to Gilly being possessed. In the end, love conquers all and the ghost is banished back to hell where he belongs.

Great, but lets discuss that little ritual Sally performed which allowed for the ghost to be banished. She used some serious old school magick, and something so simple, but effective, what is it do you ask? Why blood.

"Blood makes the grass grow"ancient saying attributed to Cu Chulainn
The concept of the sacredness and the inherit magick of blood isn't new, it's as old as time; it is even found within the context of Christianity and their belief that they are "cleansed with the blood of Christ" when they devote themselves to him (bet many Christians never saw that one coming huh?).  Blood is life without it we can't live or function, and the ancients may not have know the exact composition of blood but they knew that much, that blood was the gift of life and therefore very sacred.
In the movie, when they are doing the exorcism they try everything, and at the last moment it is Sally's decision to "blood bond" the women that actually drives the ghost out. By connecting them through blood; she was able to lift the curse. She was unwilling to sacrifice her sister, and in fact, placed herself in harms way to bring her back, in this love was her basis which allowed her magick to work, but it was strongly aided by the blood spilled.

The simple act of cutting and spilling blood as a sacrifice can be found in all forms of lore and rituals. Within the craft itself there are many sects which practice the spilling of blood with sacrifices or using blood magick to get things done.

Now I don't wish to offend anyone, but from my own personal standpoint & experiences, I have found that these magicks have some of the strongest Gods, and Goddesses, (they certainly respond a whole lot faster),but also demand more from their acolytes than the Gods that don't receive sacrifices. It could also be, that many of the sacrificial Gods have been around and practiced and worshiped for unbroken lengths of time (that's gotta count right?).
When I first started learning about the craft I came upon many books which discussed that when a circle or coven was formed there was a ritual of cutting each member and allowing their blood to mingle on the athame, which allowed their magick to recognize each other, as well as creating a cohesive store of magick which was unique to the coven. This of course fell out of favor when pathogens, like AIDS, began to spread. there are still many covens which practice the blood letting ritual but with more hygienic methods.

Now I personally remember reading about Dianic Wicca which told women not to fear their periods as this was one of their most powerful times (I still ascribe to that belief today, & is possibly the reason I never saw it as an inconvenience but revealed in the knowledge that this was something only women's bodies could perform.) They even encouraged women to use their period blood within their magical practice.

Patti over at Paganwiccan.about.com has a great article on the history of body fluids in magic, and within the craft.
"My blood, your blood, our blood"
Sally Owens, Practical magic

Now we know Hollywood doesn't really have a grasp on the concept and practice of real magick but I find it pretty awesome when unwittingly they make these connections. Sally's blood, mixed with Gilly's and her little whispered words, pulled the magic of their entire familial line into it and released Maria Owens as well as Gilly from the curse  This showed that even though magic was strong, the real magick lay within the blood, within the women themselves, making it inherit, strong and sacred.

The other parts of the movie i will be discussing within at least two other blogs for this event, so keep and eye out for those. I will also share my personal experiences with dark magick later. let me know, what did you think of that scene below in the comment section, please.
Thanks for stopping by

Monday Movies Reviews:

The Good Witch's Gift

This movie is the third installment in Good Witch movies by the Hallmark channel. And it does not disappoint. Once again we return to Middleton, and we find that Yule and Christmas are on their way.  Cassandra Nightingale and her beau Chief Russel have chosen the Big Day's date. And it's Christmas Eve, which is only SIX days away, and there begins the mad dash to an awesome day.

I LOVE Catherine Bell as Cassandra, she is refreshing and great, and obviously in these movies (it's Hallmark channel people) even though there is a lot of chemistry between Cassie and Chief Russell it's very PG. So it's a good movie for the whole family. My mom who doesn't watch anything paranormal or even slightly witchy in anyway LOVED the movie.
Cassie is a refreshing take on a witch, absolutely awesome, and has her witchyness throughout the movie without it being an overt stamp of WITCH on it.She inspires many people throught out the film much like the spirit of Christmas. Really loved how they picked the wedding date, Chief Russell            "We have been trying to pick a date for months. And something always comes up,What was the excuse last time?" Cassie " Mercury in Retrograde..."

And it's a good Christmas/Yule miracle movie about family and second chances.

I hope you will check it out

Movies for Halloween

The Good Witch with Catherine Bell (Jag, Army Wives). I saw this movie last year on the Hallmark Channel during their countdown to Halloween Spectacular.   It's a "fluffy" movie in that she never actually says she is a witch but she does make some magical things take place when she moves to town.    Her little romance with the local police chief  and how she affects the lives of the children just amazing. I love it.  Her store Bell, Book and Candle (how witchy is that)

The follow up movie The Good Witch's Garden was definitely an homage to hedge or garden witches everywhere. Check it out whenever you have a chance.

There are also some good Romantic movies:

Simple Irresistible  which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as a chef who's restaurant is failing slowly, she accidentally meets and creates the perfect recipe for the man she is crushing on.  She finds her mother's diary who was a kitchen witch, she uses these recipes to create and get her restaurant finally in the black.

What would a witchy movie list be without .... Practical Magic

I'm thinking I may not even have to do a review for this one??? Have fun checking it out (again and again)

And one of my favorite movies (its got French, chocolate, sexy Johnny Depp & magic) yes my loves its
Chocolat

This story has magic in it from the very beginning to the very end, the magic of belief, love and following the mighty North Wind.  This is told from the perspective of the little girl while also seeing everyone's life in the small French town where they fear anything different but wish deeply for change.

So check out these Witchy Romantic Movies whenever you can this Samhain

Blessed Be my loves
