Monday Movie Review:

I spent most of the weekend working on getting as much of my Movie list completed as possible, especially for the Christmas Blog Party (link on the side of the blog). I am a huge Sidney Poitier fan, especially in To Sir with Love, so I made it my goal to see all his movies.  This is the first movie I have seen that has Katherine Hepburn in it. I see why she is considered such a good actress.  This movie is and was a ground breaking movie. I believe they handled the subject matter very well.

It really looked at how those who think they are liberal react when they are faced with the results of their ideals coming home. It's one thing to say you 'believe in equal rights' it's another to have it come home to dinner, and marry your child.  I loved that the Minister is the one who pointed this very thing out to the father.

On paper this young man is a perfect catch a world renowned Dr, a ivy league graduate, he's the kind of man any father would want for their daughter; yet it was the colour of his skin that made her father hesitant to accept him.  Katherine Hepburn at first was shocked, yet when she noticed how happy her daughter was she was all for supporting them.  I loved how when put to the test she reacted to her closest friend with an unpredictable way.

I agree with her father that their guerrilla tactics of spring the news of who she was dating and the fact of their engagement was unfair; yet it gave them the advantage of seeing the true reactions beneath the 'public politically correct face'.
Now a few years later the movie was updated and changed a bit, and starred Bernie Mac (may he RIP) and Ashton Kutcher. In this updated version, the reversed roles of the affluent African American family who's daughter brought home the Caucasian fiancee'. It was more of a comedic turn than the original but was just as good (in my opinion) of showing the story from the other side.

These movies  showed that sometimes no matter how 'advanced' we think we are when our ideals are put to the challenge sometimes we are faced with our hidden bigotry.   It amazed me that even then, it was more of a hassle for the African American housekeeper to accept the concept of a mixed race couple than it did for the mother. I loved the movies and have decided to get Guess Who's coming to Dinner to add to my personal collection.

A definite movie to add to ones collection and view with a varied audience to see and discuss their reactions.

Christmas Spirit Post 5

I was watching my Yule movies and Hulu recommended the movie Homeless for the Holidays...  I resisted watching the movie because I have never seen the show or even heard about it before, once i ran through all the shows i normally watch and the ones i was looking forward to weren't on yet.

With nothing left to watch  I decided that I would watch this; if you can overlook the low budget of the movie, and it's clearly created for the Christian family & the acting is sub par at best, beneath it all is an actually good Christmas movie.
I mean what parent wouldn't be happy their child isn't hooked on the idiot tube and Internet gaming sites, the 'father' kept asking his kids why they were reading or not watching t.v.   I'm wondering if maybe it was produced by the church that they frequent in the show, as that's one of the few places they can actually show in full view.

Synopsis: "A smug executive enjoys the perfect life - until he loses his job, and finds himself working at a burger joint. Now he's falling behind on his bills, and if something doesn't change soon, his family could lose everything by Christmas."

Now personally this movie was really great at pointing out how even as the ship goes down so many of us are unwilling to jump off, but stick to our 'plans' and 'goals' even though they aren't working out. I'm not sure if the main character never read a book on job hunting or if he really was that naive, but if someone is head hunting you and you lose your job, even if it means moving to Alaska, you do what you have to do for your family, especially if you have children.

You don't hang on to your pride; you certainly don't shoot down the perfect opportunity to stay ahead of the wolves, simply because when you made your life plan you did it with the goal of living in one place forever, jobs in this economy don't coming knocking everyday.  I loved how the wife flipped out on him and made him get his head on straight because he needed to provide for them, it was however archaic that she didn't go looking for a job as well.

The movie's strong point was faith in the Christian God, and the Spirit of Christmas; it however wasn't the only point.  Now I personally took to the moving on and finding a new dream, especially because it seemed as if the Gods where pushing him and boy did he resist.  Sounds like a lot of people I know (especially me)

Take the movie as it is and you will enjoy it.

Paranormal Telly: Secret Circle Review

Well it’s been a few weeks and I can now give an honest reaction to the show…..... I hate it.

I know that sounds harsh, but Sweet Goddess, this show is shyt. They took an awesome book and fudged it all up. The freaking changes are just too much for me. I tried people I really tried to watch it as objectively as possible. But I just can't do it.

Instead of a coven of thirteen kick-ass kids who run & live in a small town off the coast of Salem Massachusetts; instead you have six whiny ass kids who live in a town where no one knows what they are (sooo not how the book went).

I can't stand Diana, Cassie is a freaking joke, Nick is an asshole, Faye is pretty much the only character who stuck to her truth (although some of her issues are so fabricated it's not even funny.  Yes I know it's a fictional story & they must find ways to hook the kids but some of this shyt is just insulting and not even worth the side effects cost, but I digress) Adam is a freaking joke & where the HELL is Raj?? What the hell is up with the parents including Faye's mom, and Diana's Dad.

Seriously who the f**k is Melissa??? Putting a few tokens on a show doesn't make you 'hip' it makes them tokens, stick to the f**king story and stop adding unnecessary bullsh*t to be politically correct.
who the HELL is Melissa and WHY is she on the show?

Don't even get me started on this stupid Jake character, Why do they keep adding these b.s characters, but they couldn't keep the original 13 ??? For real this is some serious bullsh*t.  I get so annoyed every time I watch the show I quit watching in the middle of an episode and have no urge to go back and watch it.

It sounds mean considering some of the other shows I have loved but this is just horrible, I keep waiting for some semblance of what Ms. Smith wrote to appear on the screen but other than the names and the fact that they are witches, nothing is there.  It's like Vampire Diaries all over again, seriously where was Ms. Smith's representative?? Was she asleep during that class when they taught about how to get your clients a show/movie deal? How to help them keep creative rights? 'Cause who ever they are sucked badly at it, She has no creative input and they have shot her story to hell and back.

This is supposed to be a coming of age story of a young woman who finds her true place in life, she learns what her strengths are and in doing so allows those around her to also embrace their truths, Diana pushes Cassie and becomes her very best friend (better than sisters), Faye is Cassie's nemesis for most of the story then she too stands up for her own rights and becomes the kick ass woman she was in the beginning of the story. The circle grows as a coven, taking two split parts and making a cohesive whole, not just in the circle but between Outsiders and the Families. Cassie's coming to New Salem changes everyone including her and this show doesn't embrace that at all, This Cassie doesn't listen to anyone, she's supposed to be shy and through the beginning of her change learn to assert herself and embrace the changes. There is the classic struggle between light and dark, the two sides of the coven, the two sides of Cassie, hell the two sides of human nature, especially in the last book.
The people who help to bring that on aren't even in the show, where is Sean the lovable idiot who reeks all kinds of havoc, the Henderson twins with their weird eyes, Susan the modern Aphrodite who seemingly is dumb but makes observations that are truly spot on, Laurel and Melody the herbs and crystal witches, Deborah the bike loving chick who can kick your ass, and Nick the Ice Man who totally takes you by surprise with his niceness.

I know I cling too tightly to these stories, but sometimes if the fans don't demand a good product this is what comes out, look what happened to Queen of the Damned if you have never read the books, hell if you never saw Interview with a Vampire then the movie was ok, but if your an Anne Rice fan, you left that movie theater pretty freaking pissed off, hell when I went people were leaving the theater in the MIDDLE of the movie, one guy said he was writing Anne Rice to let her know how they fracked up her book.
Seriously guys, what the f**k was this shyt?? Did any of these characters look anything like the ones in Interview?? I mean Stuart tried but he's no Lestat (but this is a whole OTHER post)
There are plenty of books I would love to see be made into shows or movies, LA Banks being the first and anything Laurell K Hamilton (pre-Bloody Noir especially for the Anita series, and pre- Divine Misdemeanors in Merry's series), but this season Ms. Hamilton shared with us how much they wished to change that she wasn't comfortable with and she said NO.

Sometimes it's ok to say NO if it means your story isn't going to be told right. In this case they should have said NO, since they aren't telling the story right.

These are my opinions and you don't have to like them, but my blog, my thought~~ as a lover of books, and these books in particular, I can't condone this show and I won't be watching it again. In my opinion find something else to watch on Thursdays. ~~ I don't like giving bad reviews, but you gotta call a spade a spade, and this ladies a gents, is a spade

On the Telly

Yeah I know it's not a paranormal show, but it's really accurate about what takes place in a hospital. HawthoRNe, is so amazing, even my nursing teachers discuss it in school.

Since Christina Hawthorne (played by the sexy Jada Pinkett Smith) is one of the only positive depictions of nurses on t.v; as much as I love House m.d, they always have the doctors doing all the work O_o unrealistic like hell, I have meet doctors in the field all the time who haven't done a venipuncture in so long (unless they are E.R or OR docs) that they end up calling for the IV nurse or just any nurse to do it (they can do it, but they sometimes stick the patient more than once to get it, and that's a big no-no). Do I personally know if all the political schennigans take place like on the show? Gods no and I hope to never be there when they go down.

Nurses are very rarely the center of any show it's always about the Doctors (not that I'm hating, but...uhmmm where would doctor's be without nurses??? #justsaying).  Nurse Jackie is a junkie, House only uses nurses in the background, I've never watched (and am never going to) Grey's Anatomy so I have no idea what they do on there, all other shows I have seen have either shown one of two stereotypes: Nurse Ratchet the mean nurse who will hold you down and give you a horrible shot, or Slutty nurse who is going to sex you better O_o on both those stereotypes, but there it is.

Ok so now the review of the show:

The show centers around the nursing staff and their interactions with doctors and patients, and the center of it all is Christina Hawthorne who is the Chief Nursing Officer (she;s the big kahuna for the nurses), it's her job to help in running the whole hospital's nursing staff and help keep the hospital afloat. In her effort she has her slightly damaged BFF Bobby, a nurse with a heart of gold and a sharp wit she uses often, Candy the sexy nurse with a penchant for making the stays of military boys "extra special". Nurse Ray who is in love with Candy, is one of the only male nurses on staff and manages to get the angst of that all down while still doing an amazing job as a nurse.  Rounding out the cast is Dr. Tom a chief of surgery, who is also a prior and future love interest for Christina, Dr. Brenda the head of her department, who is also a bit of a sour-puss, and Christina's teenage daughter from her previous marriage, Camille.

the show has an astounding cast and some amazing story lines. Some a little to dramatic for real life, but sometimes the E.R can feel just like on the show. I love it and can't wait to see what this season brings. Although I do wish they changed Christina's bandages in the show's premiere (just saying no nurse would ignore that) . You can watch the show on TNT Tuesdays @10/9c.  You can also catch up on the last few episodes on TNT.com. Last season can be viewed on Dvd from Netflix, or even on HULU.com if you have a subscription.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as I do!!
