Book Review: Prey

Book Title: Prey (Goodreads/ Amazon)

Author: Linda Howard
Publisher: Random House
Format: Hardcover
Cost: $26.00
Pages: 323
How I got it: Library
My Rating:★★★★☆
Synopsis:

Thirty-two-year-old Angie Powell has always spoken her mind, but in the presence of Dare Callahan she nurses a simmering rage. After all, why give Dare the satisfaction of knowing he can push her buttons and push her to the edge? Three years ago, Dare returned home to rural western Montana and opened a hunting business to rival Angie’s. Complicating matters is the fact that Dare has asked Angie out (not once but twice) and has given her a gift of butterflies in the process. Angie has no patience for butterflies. They only lead to foolish decisions. And now the infuriatingly handsome Iraq war vet has siphoned away Angie’s livelihood, forcing her to close up shop.

Before Angie is to leave town, she organizes one last trip into the wilderness with a client and his guest, who wants to bag a black bear. But the adrenaline-fueled adventure turns deadly when Angie witnesses a cold-blooded murder and finds herself on the wrong side of a loaded gun. Before the killer can tie up this attractive loose end, a bear comes crashing through the woods—changing the dark game completely.
Luckily, Dare is camping nearby and hears the shots. Forced together for their very survival, Angie and Dare must confront hard feelings, a blinding storm, and a growing attraction—while being stalked by a desperate killer and a ferocious five-hundred-pound beast. And neither will stop until they reach their prey.

My Review:
I have been a Linda Howard fan for years. Her last few books got some okay reviews which made them seem like books I didn't want to read, so I skipped them........I'm never listening to a bad review ever again (well in the case of Linda anyway).

I was bored and I decided to read some more books to complete my challengesl since my library had all her latest books on had I figured "kismet" & I picked them up. While they aren't the deep cover spy novels she used to write these are more of the average person meets adventure books and I like them.  In the case of "Prey" I thought "how is she going to write the bad guy in this one??"

At first I couldn't stand Dare ( I mean really??? who names their child that?? I can just hear all the school yard jokes now), he was driving our heroine out of business and seemed like he didn't even care. Then we met Dare and heard from him, and looking from his POV I started to wondered about Angie as well, hecause he brought up some valid points.

From the beginning of the book I was hooked on finding out, who done what, and how were these two going to survive. I also thought, well, that's a different perspective to write from, I'm not sure anyone ever wrote from that POV before. Unlike her previeous novels, mother nature plays a big role, in creating the circumstances that make this ordibary camping trip becomes extra ordinary. sidebar (how is it weathermen get to keep their jobs when they are wrong say about 90% of the time???)

Reading her scenes about the camping trip reminded me of my campung trips as a member of the outdoor club in college and boy did she have a lot of the details down, these memories also served to make the scenes more real and the story more valid (at least for me). When readindig the premise I wondered how the Heck Dare just happened to be camping near by (couincidence?? I think not); the scene that sets up the adventure was like watching a great action film, where the unexpected happens and your on the edge of your seat. From the begining of the trip, Angie noted the trouble between her campers, but ignored it due to her own issues, then they find the remains of young hiker who is the young man in the beginnign of the novel. This is where the ball starts rolling toward FUBAR and poor Angie has no idea what is about to go down.

Now you have a madman with a gun loose on the mountain. a man eating bear, Angie without a horse or her weapons, and Mother Nature decided to dump an ice storm untop of all this, all while the characters are miles from any kind of help.

I couldn't put the book down, I believe I read it in three days, I was that hooked. The climax of the book wasn't as good as I would have hoped, but then how do you enjoy the end of such a grand adventure?? All I know is I'm never going camping anywhere near here EVER, And now I also understand why they hunt the animals that harm humans I may not like it,( your in their turf you get eaten, you were stupid, wild animals are just that "wild") but I now understand.

Make space on your To be read Pile (actually move it to the top) especially if you love romance & adventure.
Happy Reading

Book Review: Destiny Calls

Book Title: Destiny Calls
Author: Samantha Wayland
Publisher: Ellorascave ( Jasmine Jade Publishing)
Pages: 209
Cost; $ 6.99
How I Got it: Purchased
Description: Patrick didn’t think it would be a big deal to kiss his best friend Brandon. Hell, they’d done crazier things to avoid a bar fight. He was totally unprepared to be wildly turned on, the kiss opening up new avenues of pleasure he’d never dreamt of—Patrick, after all, was straight, even if Brandon wasn’t.
Destiny’s never been afraid to ask for what she wants. When she sees Patrick and Brandon together, she knows exactly what she wants—the three of them in bed together, preferably with her in the middle of a hot, naked-man sandwich with her two best friends.
When Brandon finds himself hunted by an unknown enemy, the three friends find themselves fighting for their lives—and their hearts.

My take on the book:
Move over Destiny because these men are mine!! Can I say Samantha did it again? Her books (at least these two that I have read) are amazing. Characters with depth, relationships with meaning, Sex to die for, a little adventure thrown in & you have one hell of a story. I love the realism of the story, just because we have a thing going on doesn't mean it's permanent, & it takes one hell of a change for the people involved to look around and realise that they want more than just tonight. It sure helps that they run into the characters from With Grace. The books do link together, enhancing each story but can be read as stand alone as well. When I read With Grace, I immediately went back and purchased Destiny Calls just because I was so intrigued to hear Brandon's story.

The sex scenes are steamy, the romance is a bumpy ride to happiness & for once it's not the woman in the relationship who wants it to be permanent, in fact...wait no... I won't spoil it for you. Read this book, get the other one as well, lock the door and read to your hearts' content.

Story is 5/5 Excellent Read
Sex Scenes are 5/5 of Steamy

I truly enjoy supporting Jasmine Jade/Ellorascave books & I think you should too. (I am not receiving anything from them to say this or to review the books, so it's a honest review and an honest show of love for small press companies)

Be Blessed & Enjoy your reads

Book Review:

Book Title: The Forest Lord
Author: Susan Krinard
Pages: 400
How I got it: From my personal Library
Synopsis: To return to Tir-a-nog, Hern must conceive a half mortal child to help keep the Fae from dieing off. Centuries ago Hern made a pact with the humans near the ancient forest, the family doesn’t hunt in the forest and they will prosper, this plan has worked for generations, now someone has broken his vow, and Hern’s wrath will be felt”
My Review:
I have had this book in my collection several years, and just never got around to reading it. Can I tell you how upset I am that I waited this long?? This is a great read, i’m thinking Mrs or is it Miss Krinard is wither a Celtic Pagan or she has done some serious research int the myths of Herne.
I really wished to read this for the Welcoming the God event, but school intervened with plenty of projects, so I’m now learning to slide in the fun stuff during the robust studying sessions.

Why I Love It: She obviously did her research because just about everything she shared is information of the Celtic traditions. which I greatly appreciated (nothing i hate more than to read a book and realize the 1) author has never been to the place they are describing 2) they are making assumptions about a culture, history or a people 3) they are relying on faulty or dated information and passing that shiggity on)
I love Herne (the real God) and the god Hern in the book, the character carries many of the similarities between the one I have met and the one in the book. Strong, proud, arrogant, ( I mean he is a God right?) Her description of the character in his true form and the known form of Herne the God evoke a sense of power (or perhaps I'm adding that sense since I associate those feeling with the God )
Mrs Krinard was excellent at the describing the history of the story without bogging it down the story with unnecessary information. the female lead Eden was an excellent character to read about and to hear from as some of the story was told from her point of view.
There are more books in the series called "The Fane" which I will look forward to reading.
I see this becoming one of my favorite reads, as I loved the ending. this was a great Faerie tale and like all Faerie tales it ended with a great twist.

Enjoy the Tales my loves

Book Review: The Peach Keeper

Book Title: The Peach Keeper
Author: Sarah Addison Allen
Publisher: Bantam
Pages: 288
Cost; $25.00
How I Got it:  Library
Description:

It’s the dubious distinction of thirty-year-old Willa Jackson to hail from a fine old Southern family of means that met with financial ruin generations ago. The Blue Ridge Madam—built by Willa’s great-great-grandfather during Walls of Water’s heyday, and once the town’s grandest home—has stood for years as a lonely monument to misfortune and scandal. And Willa herself has long strived to build a life beyond the brooding Jackson family shadow. No easy task in a town shaped by years of tradition and the well-marked boundaries of the haves and have-nots.

But Willa has lately learned that an old classmate—socialite do-gooder Paxton Osgood—of the very prominent Osgood family, has restored the Blue Ridge Madam to her former glory, with plans to open a top-flight inn. Maybe, at last, the troubled past can be laid to rest while something new and wonderful rises from its ashes. But what rises instead is a skeleton, found buried beneath the property’s lone peach tree, and certain to drag up dire consequences along with it.

For the bones—those of charismatic traveling salesman Tucker Devlin, who worked his dark charms on Walls of Water seventy-five years ago—are not all that lay hidden out of sight and mind. Long-kept secrets surrounding the troubling remains have also come to light, seemingly heralded by a spate of sudden strange occurrences throughout the town.

Now, thrust together in an unlikely friendship, united by a full-blooded mystery, Willa and Paxton must confront the dangerous passions and tragic betrayals that once bound their families—and uncover truths of the long-dead that have transcended time and defied the grave to touch the hearts and souls of the living---from Goodreads.com

My take on the book:
Some Secrets will always out. This is the story of how one community and a few families deal with the fallout of this secret resurfacing.  This time the magic wasn't modern but was more a left over from the previous generation and  wasn't really something these families had within them, but something and someone from out of town brought with them. This book overall was very different from the other three she has written, this was darker than the other novels. this book really looks at what it means to be a good friend, & how the concept of friendship has changed within the generations.

I enjoyed that the characters in this novel were a lot more 'ordinary' compared to the other novels, yet, magic was still within the novel, within the town, and even within some of the families.. The love stories that formed were much quicker and in more detail than the other stories.  i personally enjoyed the story because of it's exploration of friendship, how it can take a lifetime to built, or sometimes,w hen you meet someone that single moment that lets you know that person will always impact your life.

The major characters who thought they had 'grown-up' and changed and learned that sometimes you don't have to completely abandon who you are to actually grow up. I really enjoyed the story of Paxton and Willa's friendship, Willa's relationship with her father, and what she really thought that happened compared to what really happened, and how knowing the true facts actually freed her to live the life she truly wanted. I was so surprised and happy as heck to see a former book character or two actually make an appearance in this book, and I sooo wanted to know more about them and their lives, but it was not to be.

I finished this book with a lightness in my heart because I could so see the ending Sarah wanted us to have and it was good. I am however stalking her webpage to find out when her next one comes out and I can't wait!!!!

Enjoy this novel as well as the others my loves

Book Review: Diamond Bay

Book Title: Diamond Bay
Author:  Linda Howard
Publisher: Mira
Pages: 218
Cost; $ 0
How I Got it: Library
Description:

Any hopes Kell Sabin has about taking a month’s vacation from work vanish the minute several of Kell’s “business associates” try to kill him. Although he manages to escape with just a bullet hole or two, he wouldn’t have survived if Rachel Jones hadn’t found him when he washed ashore not far from her cottage on Diamond Bay. Because her previous career as an investigative journalist taught her that things are not always what they seem, Rachel knows she is going to have to find out more about the wounded man who ends up in her home. Helping Kell is a risk Rachel is willing to take, but the risk becomes even greater once Rachel realises she is falling in love with a man with no future.

My take on the book:
Now this story was written many years ago, so some of the mannerisms are a little outdated ( I believe they recently updated the book along with the cover) Yet the story is pretty good, non the less, I actually really enjoyed this one I mean it's no longer the cold war era but our soldiers still have enemies to combat so I just updated it for myself while I was reading. I have always enjoy Ms Howard's spy novels, the action is always good, the characters well developed, they flow well, the writing is always on point & the love scenes are always good. The heat between the two characters is amazing. Rachel takes a chance on Kell that turns out to be right, lucky for him too; that as a reporter she had been exposed to more of the world than your average person.  Until I read books like these I would have never though about it, not about the men & what they truly give up or even about what they did. Rachel needed Sabin just as much as he needed her & they are very good together. I enjoy seeing other characters in the books or even the hint of other characters & knowing that they have a future story coming up it's so cool.

I love coming back to these books and reading them again, even though I know how the story ends, that's how good Linda writes her books.
