Yule Reading: Fiction "Burning Bright"

witchreads

The fiction novel I read the most of at this time of year. Burning Bright , an anthology by Maggie Shayne, Anne Stuart, and Judith Arnold.  The reason for this? It’s the only fiction novel I have seen which talks about Yule, as well as Judaism, and Christianity. All the stories circulate around a mysterious store in Crescent Cove Vermont, appearing to each woman as a different kind of shop, and the mysterious shop owner? Why even she’s got the Spirit of Yule in spades. And of course there is love as it always is at this time of year.

Maggie Shayne (herself being Wiccan) writes the story of Dori Stewart a Wiccan HP who returns to her little town of Crescent Cove Vermont. She’s a Priestess experiencing her own crisis of faith right before the Solstice and runs into a little old woman and a mysterious Candle shop which begin her journey back to the path of the Crone.

The second story is just as beautiful with Angela is reeling from her divorce to the “perfect” guy, and she returns home to her special cove and discovers that her long lost crush is also home nursing his wounds. The Christmas Spirit works her miracle here too.

The last story is for Alana who is desperate to hang on the traditions of her Grandmother who has passed. She’s seeking the perfect candle for her menorah, and hopes to capture the special Holiday warmth her Grandmother had in spades to share at her open house. Along comes the Old Spirit to aide in her search.

I love this book, because it finally shows how similar our traditions are as well as doing a beautiful job, combining and circling each other in this small town. This little candle shop appeared to meet each woman's need while never really being of anyone "true" particular shop. Each woman sought something different and the shop was there to aide them truly find what they were seeking. The Old woman reminds me of Mama Odie from "the Princess and the Frog" (yes it's a disney reference).  I re-read this book every Yule time and enjoy every time. I really love Dori’s story, because it definitely aided in helping thorough a rough spot many a year.

I hope you enjoy it as well my loves
Bright Blessings
